We’ve seen major shifts both locally and nationally, with a change of Government and the emergence of racist far-right riots followed by inspiring counter-protests that remind us of the power of community solidarity. As we soak up the last rays of summer, we’re thrilled to share the latest updates from Borderlands. Despite the challenges, it’s been a season filled with meaningful connections, resilience, and hope. Here’s a look back at some of the incredible celebrations, milestones, and growth we've experienced over the past few months. |

From June the 4th to August 27th, we welcomed 140 new members. This growing community is a testament to the ongoing need for a space where people can find support, safety, and companionship. Between April 4th and August 27th, 336 people visited our drop-in centre. Each person came for their own reasons—some sought advice, others needed a hot meal or food from our social supermarket, while many took part in activities like getting a haircut, using our computers, or simply enjoying the sense of belonging that fills the space. The Social Supermarket has also seen a busy summer, with 480 visits recorded between June and late |

This summer, we partnered with several amazing groups to address various needs. Healthwatch Bristol, for instance, provided healthcare advice and conducted research into the experiences of our members in the UK healthcare system, which will contribute to a wider regional needs assessment. Refugee Women of Bristol led an important session on domestic abuse awareness, and Feeding Bristol & Fareshare helped us organise a food justice event. This event, which brought together our members and staff, celebrated culture and diversity while facilitating discussions on food-related issues affecting refugees and asylum seekers in Bristol. We also had SARI (Stand Against Racism) offering free, confidential support for victims of hate crime, and Family Health Matters launched a study focused on mothers and carers from refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds with young children. Bristol Refugee Rights hosted an information session on the rights of refugees and asylum seekers in the UK, while Our Second Home promoted exciting activities for young people. These partnerships have allowed us to expand the support we provide and ensure our members have access to a wide range of services. |

| Our partnership with Bridges for Communities has allowed us to run two sewing sessions each Wednesday, providing a women-only space for learning sewing skills, practicing English, and socialising. Similarly, Bella, our wonderful yoga instructor, has led Kundalini Yoga classes each week, giving members a chance to unwind, relax, and meditate. These women-only sessions also provide a great opportunity to socialise with snacks, tea, and coffee afterwards. We have also collobarated with Bridges for Communities to run a photography workshop, where members learned new techniques and took part in a joint project that will culminate in an exhibition in late 2024. |

We’ve also hosted women-only dance workshops with our talented instructor, Dvija, who led sessions exploring different dance styles, from contemporary to Bollywood. These classes were filled with joy, movement, and a sense of freedom as participants came up with their own moves and danced together. |

This summer, we launched football sessions for male members, training two teams to compete in Bristol’s Community Cup in mid-June. Although we didn’t win, we’re gearing up for next year’s tournament! Thanks to the Refugees Rock project, we started offering free climbing sessions at The Mothership Climbing Centre, which have been so popular that they will become a weekly event starting in September. |

| Trips and leisure activities are a vital part of our mission at Borderlands, offering our members opportunities to explore new places and connect with nature. We had the pleasure of taking two trips to the SS Great Britain, where our members had the opportunity to explore Bristol’s rich maritime history. The visits not only allowed them to learn more about the city they now call home, but also opened doors for potential volunteer placements as tour guides. A big thank you to the SS Great Britain for offering such a meaningful and engaging experience to our members, helping them connect with Bristol's history while building valuable skills for the future! |

This week, we held our annual beach trip, and this year we decided to explore a new location: Clevedon. We chose this spot to offer our members a potentially more accessible destination for future visits. The day was fantastic, rain or shine, and we didn’t let the weather dampen our spirits! In true Borderlands style, one of our talented member chefs prepared a delicious spread of pakoras, samosas, and a variety of fresh salads for lunch. We enjoyed a scenic coastal walk, played games, and breathed in the refreshing sea air. It was a day full of fun and connection, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s adventure! |

This summer saw the introduction of new mentor training from our brilliant partners at Trauma Foundation Southwest (TFSW). TFSW provide free, long-term counselling and psychotherapy to refugees and asylum seekers and supports staff and volunteers in the sector with its extensive training and supervision offering. Mentors now receive training from TFSW on how to approach their partnerships from a trauma informed perspective in addition to a workshop on avoiding vicarious trauma. We have also set up monthly group supervisions for mentors with TFSW in order to create a safe and confidential space for mentors to come together and share any concerns they may have with a trained mental health professional. Looking forward we plan to recruit and run training for new mentors in the autumn. There has been a great deal of interest in the project and we look forward to welcoming some new faces to the mentoring team soon as well as to continuing to work with our wonderful and committed group of existing mentors. |

“[My mentor] was one of the first people I really spoke to - she helped me find friends and community. When we spoke together it improved my self confidence. Before meeting her, I was scared of people and didn't want to share about my life. After we met, I felt so much more confident speaking to strangers.” - D, 23 |

We have had lots of new members signing up for ESOL classes as well as a strong core of longer-term students attending. Thanks to our fantastic teaching volunteers, we have been able to offer 12 classes a week as well as specialist 1:1 support. The lessons continue to be engaging, varied and fun with lots of games and activities, including one class learning to sing songs by The Beatles! |

| We celebrated the amazing progress of our students at the English Summer Party, kindly hosted by the Trinity Centre. Members enjoyed a delicious picnic and learnt to play our favourite Borderlands game ‘Klubb’ as well as Boules and Uno! Thanks to our brilliant volunteers, the Learning Navigation table in the Drop-In has gone from strength to strength. In 1:1 conversations, we can discuss members’ academic goals and aspirations, support with college and university applications, and signpost to other activities happening in Bristol. We also run assessments to place members in our Borderlands ESOL classes. |

Our Women’s Theatre Group has been paused over the summer and instead we have run a series of fantastic cultural trips. These have included private viewings of exhibitions at The Arnolfini and RWA, a fascinating historical walking tour of Bristol, and multiple plays at the Bristol Old Vic. We are looking forward to relaunching the theatre workshops in September! |

The lovely Poetry group has been particularly popular this term. This is a huge testament to the volunteers’ creativity and inclusivity. They brilliantly draw our wide-ranging discussions from the group, and the members enjoy having a space to discuss their thoughts and ideas as well as discovering new literature. Finally, in response to requests from members, we have had a weekly Employability course run in partnership with CURO. This has provided people with the knowledge and confidence they need to apply for jobs, write CVs, attend interviews, and prepare for getting employment in the UK. |

Back in June, we had a fantastic staff away day, giving us a special opportunity to come together, step away from our daily tasks, and focus on the bigger picture. We reflected on our aims, goals, and strategies for the next few years, sharing new ideas and experiences from our time at Borderlands. We discussed how we can continue to make a positive impact in our community and find even more ways to support those we serve. A huge thank you to Hill House Retreats for hosting us — we truly appreciate your hospitality and look forward to partnering with you in the future! |

This Volunteer Week, we celebrated our amazing team of over 100 volunteers who are an essential part of all our projects. In July we also hosted a fantastic volunteer social in the beautiful Trinity gardens! The sun was shining, we played an array of field games, and one of our incredible volunteer chefs prepared a delicious Sri Lankan meal for everyone to enjoy. |

Earlier this year, we faced the challenge of pausing our beloved Monday cooking sessions due to our funding coming to an end. Determined to revive this essential project, we hosted a special fundraising dinner this summer. Friends of Borderlands came together for an unforgettable evening, enjoying a meal prepared by one of our talented volunteer chefs. We’re thrilled to share that we raised over £400, which means we can now fund eight weeks of Monday cooking sessions! We’re deeply grateful to everyone who attended and donated. The Sri Lankan feast was a highlight of the evening, and we hope to host more events like this to showcase the amazing talents of our members. |

In August, Bristol witnessed a small number of far-right protesters attempting to spread hate, but our city’s true spirit shone through as we came together to outnumber and stand up against them. In response to these events, the people of Bristol launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the migrant families affected by these protests. The funds raised will help show these families that they are welcome here, and that Bristol stands with them. A huge thank you to everyone who donated! |
